International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s Operational Guidance on Hospital Radiopharmacy is intended to provide practical assistance to nuclear medicine centers in setting up and running a hospital ‘hot laboratory’ or radiopharmacy service.

Current guidelines do not address the risk of exposure of radiopharmaceutical drugs

Current guidelines do not address the risk of exposure of radiopharmaceutical drugs to the healthcare worker in terms of drug activity or prevention of microbial contamination during preparation and administration. They do, however, address the risk of exposure to the radioactive isotopes.

Radiopharmaceuticals tend to differ from normal medicines in that they have a short half-life. Because of their rapid decay, they must be prepared shortly before their clinical use and comprehensive quality control (QC) of the final product is not possible: sterility testing, for instance, cannot be performed due to time limits. Safe and effective preparation and use of radiopharmaceuticals is, therefore, vital for the protection of the operator and the final user - the patient.
